Nominations in for Dr. Andrew Thompson Award

Nominations include premiers and piano tuners, feisty activists and seasoned lawyers.

The nominations are in for the first Dr. Andrew Thompson Award. The award, to be presented at West Coast’s 30th Anniversary Celebration on October 14th (see accompanying notice on page 8), will recognize an individual for lifelong contributions to the environmental protection and sustainability of British Columbia through the law.

Nominees include a wide variety of individuals: politicians that have shown leadership and wisdom in reforming environmental laws; lone activists living in isolated cabins and challenging environmental incursions that threaten the land they love; lawyers who have spent decades helping others protect the environment, setting precedents and advocating for better laws; and civil servants who have proven the impact of dedicated public service.

But the nominees have a few things in common: they have devoted much of their life to sustainability and better environmental protection; they are individuals whose achievements and dedication are humbling; they are individuals who have made a huge difference.

“I’m excited about this award,” said West Coast Executive Director Chris Rolfe. “It honours both Dr. Thompson and individuals who have helped protect the land and communities that we know and love.”

Dr. Andrew Thompson was widely recognized as the dean of the environmental law in British Columbia. He was committed to resolving environmental law disputes through constructive, cooperative dialogue, careful reasoning and clear analysis, and ensuring a meaningful role for the public in environmental decision-making.

“The nominees are people who have either changed laws to better protect the environment, or used existing laws to protect the environment,” said Rolfe. “We know how difficult those tasks are. It’s a real pleasure recognizing this slate of nominees.”

In 2002, West Coast Environmental Law was proud to receive a gift of $100,000 from the family of Dr. Andrew Thompson to fund an ongoing award that honours Dr. Thompson.

The gift that keeps giving, and giving, and giving...

We are grateful to all our donors and supporters, but each month, we say a special thank you to the members of our West Coast Protectors’ Club. These special donors make small monthly donations to our operating costs, through an automatic withdrawal from their chequing account or VISA card. It’s a very simple way to give, and also very painless.

For example, you might allow us to draw just $10 a month from your account (about the price of one movie, or two lunches, or three coffees). You’ll hardly notice the money is gone, and at year-end, when we send you a tax-deductible receipt, you’ll have made a significant contribution of $120!

And the value of your monthly donation to us goes beyond the face value of your gift. We can reduce renewal notices to monthly donors (saving paper and other resources), and your generous gift provides an ongoing, reliable source of operating funds, allowing us to focus our attention on emerging and critical issues.

The Protectors’ Club is critical to West Coast’s long-term plans. It is our most reliable and important means of support on a month to month basis. We invite you to now become part of this important program. Your gift, of any amount, is greatly appreciated. However you choose to give, thank you.

If you have a credit card, we can accept your donation online! To make a tax-creditable donation to West Coast, click here, and you will be taken to our secure, encrypted payment page.
