Oil, Gas and Mining

WCEL > Issues > Oil, Gas and Mining

From the seismic lines that criss-cross wilderness and farmland in the Peace district to the toxic run-off from the abandoned Britannia mine site just outside of Vancouver, the oil and gas and mining industries are heavy contributors to some of BC's most difficult environmental problems.

West Coast's Oil, Gas and Mining program has three goals:

  • To develop a comprehensive picture of the laws and regulations that determine how these industries impact our environment.
  • To provide legal support to communities and individuals dealing with the environmental impacts associated with these industries.
  • To develop better regulation to reduce the environmental harm associated with these industries.

Oil & Gas

Doubling oil and gas production. Opening up BC's coast to offshore production. Coalbed methane development in the South east corner of the Kootenays and on Vancouver Island. New pipelines crossing our province. Each of these initiatives could have enormous impact on BC's environment. The BC government is planning to complete all these projects and more.

Are the laws in place to manage these and other similar projects across the Canadian North? How can we ensure better public access to decision making? Are pending legal changes going to help or hurt our environment?

West Coast's Oil and Gas program is helping activists and citizens sort through these issues.

Images and press information on coalbed methane exploration in BC are available here.

Mining

Undermining The Law

See our report, Undermining the Law, for a look at BC's record of enforcing our mining laws.

From deregulation to changes to BC's contaminated sites regulations, there's a lot happening in BC when it comes to mining - much of it could harm our environment. West Coast is working to change this and develop a legal framework for environmentally responsible mining.

Current projects include the first comprehensive review of Free Entry Laws - the laws that give mining companies rights to enter private land for the purpose of conducting mining activities.
