Smart Bylaws Guide – Connect the Green Infrastructure – Environmentally Sensitive Areas - Burnaby

In 1994 Burnaby commissioned an ESA report, titled The Nature of Burnaby: An Environmentally Sensitive Areas Strategy, that broadly identified both private and public lands which could be considered ESAs. Taking a phased implementation approach, Council adopted 10 comprehensive principles for sensitively managing public ESA lands as the first step in the strategy. These public lands are identified in the OCP and Greater Vancouver Regional District Regional Growth Strategy as Green Zone Lands, and encompass 25% of the municipal land base.  The City's current approach, and policy and regulatory tools employed for achieving environmental protection, are summarized in diagrammatic form in the City's Environmental Policy Framework and Environmental Regulatory Framework.
