Smart Bylaws Guide – Transit-Supportive Land Uses Active Transportation

The terms “active transportation” and “active living” refer to mobility systems that integrate physical activity into everyday life.  Key to promoting active lifestyles is the design of communities to encourage pleasant and accessible routes for non-motorized transportation.  Municipalities are turning to active transportation strategies to decrease traffic congestion and air pollution, and promote citizen well-being and vibrant mixed-use communities.  

Active transportation is a core component of an integrated, sustainable transportation network.

Institute of Transportation Engineers

The Institute of Transportation (ITE) Technical Conference in 2003 included a special session on active transportation featuring a partnership between the transportation and health care professions.  The ITE now hosts a website of active living- and transportation-related links.  These links include descriptions of projects that have won pedestrian awards, and articles about bicycling, transportation policy, land use and the transportation-health connection:
