Smart Bylaws Guide – Redevelop Brownfields & Greyfields –
Eco-Industrial Networking
Eco-industrial networking (EIN) is the industrial equivalent of
creating compact complete communities
characterized by mixed-use
development. It is the application of industrial ecology to
specific businesses and land uses. The goal is to improve
economic and environmental performance of governments, businesses
and the community by creating networks and relationships to increase
energy, water and materials use efficiencies as well as decrease
waste. Firms work together to make more efficient use of
materials, reduce transportation requirements, and ensure the re-use
and recycling of waste.
Eco-industrial
networking often takes place in specific geographic locations called
eco-industrial parks where businesses can share material inputs and
recycle waste within the business park. The waste from one
firm may be the raw material input for another. Green
infrastructure is incorporated throughout the site and building
quality is based on high performance
building design (green buildings).
EIN principles include (adapted from Eco-Industrial
Solutions):
-
resource
recycling and sharing among businesses;
-
waste
reduction;
-
increased
efficiency in the use of energy, materials, and land;
-
land
use and materials efficiencies through the use of high
performance buildings and site layouts that will help achieve
the above principles and retain green spaces; and
-
economic
development opportunities based on an efficient and sustainable
land use and industrial infrastructure.
