Smart Bylaws Guide – Gain Community Support – Referring
Development Applications to Community Organizations
Several municipalities refer development permit applications,
rezonings and subdivision proposals to the relevant neighbourhood or
stewardship group to receive comments and input. Developers
are expected to address neighbourhood concerns.
In Burnaby, stewardship groups provide input on development
applications as well as stormwater and watershed management plans.
Saanich
asks developers to meet with the appropriate neighbourhood
association and discuss the community’s concerns before making a
formal application to the municipality. This approach has improved
the dialogue between citizens, developers and the municipality, and
ensures that neighbourhood issues are addressed before they come to
council.
Following the success of neighbourhood involvement in the Selkirk
Waterfront redevelopment, the City of Victoria asks developers
to meet with the affected neighbourhood association to discuss the
project and problem-solve.
