Campaign Update

Metro news climate cover story

BC communities are demanding accountability from fossil fuel companies. Rather than just pass on climate costs to their taxpayers they are sending Climate Accountability Letters to 20 of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies asking that these companies pay a fair share of local costs.

The letters, addressed to companies like Chevron, Exxon and Saudi Aramco, challenge these companies and their shareholders to grapple with their business model and what it means to take “cradle to grave” responsibility for products that are destroying the health of our global atmosphere.

This web page is intended to track which communities have voted to send climate accountability letters. Follow the links to see the letters sent by each municipality.

And on February 21, 2019, the City of Burnaby sent a letter to BC Premier John Horgan, urging the provincial government to create legislation allowing municipal governments to launch and join class action lawsuits against fossil fuel companies for climate-related harms.
