This joint statement from community organizations and allies across Canada expresses our support for the important work Environment and Climate Change Canada is undertaking to develop Canada’s first national strategy to assess, prevent and address environmental racism and to advance environmental justice. We are hopeful that this opportunity to address environmental racism will finally become reality in Canada. In this joint statement, we provide a high level summary of what a credible strategy will include.
This strategy is more important than ever, as the government pursues major projects on fast timelines and with reduced regulatory oversight. Exacerbating environmental racism and injustice is not in the national interest. Advancing environmental justice is a nation-building strategy.
