West Coast is part of the legal team supporting the youth-led climate lawsuit La Rose v. His Majesty the King, which goes to trial in October 2026.
Filed in October 2019, the suit is brought by 14 young Canadians representing seven provinces and one territory seeking to hold the federal government accountable for its systemic role in causing climate change. The plaintiffs argue that they are already being harmed by climate change, and that the federal government – by consistently missing the climate targets it has set for itself – is violating their rights to life, liberty and security of the person under section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Alongside partners Our Children’s Trust, Arvay Finlay, Tollefson Law and Pacific Centre for Environmental Law & Litigation, West Coast is contributing our expertise to strengthen the case’s legal strategy and foundation. Our staff lawyers help ensure the youth plaintiffs have the strongest possible support as they make their case for a safer, more sustainable future. We also collaborate with our partners to help raise awareness about this landmark case and what’s at stake for young people across Canada.
After years of perseverance, the plaintiffs will finally get their chance to be heard when their two-month trial begins in Vancouver on October 26, 2026.
