Summary

In July 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a ground-breaking advisory opinion on the obligations of states in respect of climate change. The court found that governments must reduce greenhouse gas emissions “as rapidly as possible” in accordance with their highest possible ambition, and that these duties extend to all stages of fossil fuel production, not just emissions from burning those fuels.

This letter, signed by 34 non-governmental organizations from across British Columbia, calls on Premier David Eby and the BC government to adopt stronger climate action in light of the landmark ICJ opinion. As the letter emphasizes, the ICJ opinion establishes that climate action is not a political choice, but a legal duty grounded in international and Canadian law.
